“Lost At Sea” Exercise

You have chartered a sailing expedition on the Pacific Ocean with a small group of friends, led by the yacht captain and her 2-person crew. Unfortunately, a fire broke out and destroyed most of the boat. The skipper and crew were lost in the fire and the yacht is slowly sinking. The navigation equipment was ruined and your best estimate is that you are hundreds of miles away from shore.

You have salvaged a rubber lifeboat, three $5 bills, and a box of matches – plus 14 additional items.

Your task is to rank the remaining 14 items in terms of importance as you wait to be rescued.

  • A shaving mirror
  • A quantity of mosquito netting
  • A 5-gallon can of water
  • A case of army rations
  • Maps of the Pacific Ocean
  • A floating seat cushion
  • A 2 gallon can of oil/petroleum mixture
  • A small transistor radio
  • 20 square feet of opaque plastic sheeting
  • A can of shark repellent
  • One bottle of 160 proof rum
  • 15 feet of nylon rope
  • 2 boxes of chocolate bars
